We’ve sung the praises of Braun Series 9 All-in-One Trimmer before. Not simply because it does it all, but because it does it all so damn well. I love the care my barber puts into making my beard its very best, but when I want to stretch my dollar, this multitasker can’t be beat. Packing no less than 40 (!) length settings in half-millimeter increments (0.5-20 mm), it’s my workhorse when it’s been too long between barber visits, both for shaving my head but (especially) for keeping my beard in check. I love the three-hour charge, and I love the peace of mind the waterproofing gives me to safely trim in the shower even more.Best Budget Beard Trimmer: Wahl Groomsman Rechargeable Beard Trimmer Kit
Wahl GroomsmanCourtesy Image
Wahl is a trusted perennial brand (literally founded in 1919) and, thankfully, it continues to market budget-friendly options. The corded/cordless Wahl Groomsman Rechargeable Beard Trimmer Kit may not stand up to years of heavy use, but that’s okay if you’re going for occasional cleanups. This kit has all the guard attachments you could ever want, plus a nose trimmer to delete those unfortunate strays.Related: Best Shaving Cream for Men to Get a Closer Shave in 2025Best Beard Trimmer Upgrade: BaBylissPRO FX+ Professional Barber Trimmer

Though a step up in price from more common consumer brands, BaBylissPRO is an industry darling among barbers. It’s the favorite of Andy Campos, owner of The Barbers Lounge in Los Angeles. BaBylissPRO FX+ Professional Barber Hair Trimmer does it all for your beard and up top, should you want that as well, with corded and cordless options. The four-hour cordless battery life is especially nice, whether you’re a barber or mastering that beard lineup at home.Best Beard Trimmer for Precision Styling: Andis 04780 Professional T-Outliner Beard & Hair Trimmer

It isn’t all about BaByliss in the pro barber product space. You may very well have had your beard expertly lined up and faded with an Andis trimmer. Andis 04780 Professional T-Outliner Beard & Hair Trimmer holds up to intense usage. It’s loved as much for whacking through a bushy beard as for ultra-close zero gapping work.Related: Best Beard Oil Options of 2025 to Refine Your Facial HairBest Lightweight Beard Trimmer: Bevel Beard Travel Trimmer SE

Like many pro-level trimmers, Bevel Beard Travel Trimmer SE boasts an impressive four hours of cordless power. What’s even more pleasant is the plastic body’s barely there weight (as far as serious trimmers go), which is 39 percent lighter than a metal counterpart, per the brand, and repels dirt, oil, and other jammers.Best Waterproof Beard Trimmer: Philips Norelco OneBlade 360 Hybrid Face, Electric Beard Trimmer and Shaver

You’ll find more than one great multi-grooming trimmer on this list. But Philips Norelco OneBlade 360 Hybrid Face, Electric Beard Trimmer and Shaver is quite a special multitasking tool, going from longer stubble to the tiniest whiskers (and your body!). It’s “ideal for confident, freehand beard sculpting,” says Clark of the trimmer and shaver, which also has an IPX7 waterproof rating. That means you can use it safely in the shower—just please don’t drench it.How to Choose the Right Beard TrimmerFinding the right beard trimmer really comes down to two things: what you want, and the texture of your beard. Some beard trimmers are better at certain things; some do it all pretty well. But these are the key criteria to keep in mind on your shopping journey.Consider Your Length and Hair TypeThick beard? Long beard? Shadow? Without a doubt, the biggest question hanging over your beard trimmer decision is how much you want to do with it beyond, say, cleaning up your beard. We love the Braun Series 9 All-in-One Trimmer for its versatility—an ability to do most things very well, from a lineup to a chest hair cleanup to, um, other things down there. More focused products can shine in their own way. For instance, Andis 04780 Professional T-Outliner Beard & Hair Trimmer is corded-only (please don’t take it in the shower!) but acclaimed by barbers for its persnickety talent when it comes up to shaping the tiniest beard and other hair details.Related: Best Beard Brush Options to Maintain Your Mug in 2024Decide on WaterproofingTechnically, any electric trimmer is going to suffer some long-term wear and tear being used in the shower. That said, cordless, waterproof-rated trimmers for your beard or head are a tremendous convenience. (I personally can’t stand the tiny bits of beard hair that get caught in my bathroom tile grout and are nearly impossible to clean.) All that being said, a number of the options on our list are shower-approved, which is helpful when you need to nail your morning body hygiene and your stubble at once.Be Mindful of PriceWe all have a budget to consider. The options listed here are meant to span whatever your wallet can achieve without going into debt. Professional-type gear is priced likewise. Do-it-all consumer options can run into expensive territory, too. Generally, the fewer extra features (whether it’s a bevy of attachments or cord/cordless versatility), the more affordable the trimmer. How to Clean and Maintain a Beard Trimmer”A quality trimmer should last for years,” explains Justin Virgil of Brooklyn’s Persons of Interest Barbershop. “But it has to be maintained properly.” Tossing it in the drawer after a quick morning buzz is easy, but cleaning, oiling, and properly charging your trimmer will keep this important grooming tool running at its peak, and keep you well-styled for as long as you have your beard. Before you do anything, check if your beard trimmer has wet/dry capabilities. Here’s one clue: If it plugs into the wall, it can’t be rinsed. You’ll surely be zapped. Some cordless devices aren’t designed for wet use, but a quick Google on your product model will give you an answer. And in the future, when you buy your next beard trimmer, make sure to get a wet/dry model. It’ll make this process far easier, and will allow for a quick hot-water rinse to flush the device between more ceremonious cleanings. Be sure to do so after each use. 1. Keep Your Blade Oil StockedVirgil notes that “lubricating your clippers with blade oil” is a key step to keeping them in working condition. “Any trimmer worth a damn will come with a small bottle of this oil when you purchase it,” he adds. And if you don’t have the oil in question, it’s easy (and inexpensive) enough to order online or pick up at a local store. 2. Clean Your Blades Regularly”After every use of the trimmer, it’s important to clear away hair from the blades with a clean brush,” Virgil says, adding that toothbrushes are an ideal size for this task. Don’t use an old, retired one with decrepit bristles. This is when you want firm, effective bristles. Once a week, or after every 2-3 trims (whichever comes first), put some hand soap or body wash on the toothbrush and gently brush the trimmer’s teeth under warm water (in place of the general rinse you do on other days).Related: I Tested the Best Face Sunscreens for Men. Here’s What I’d Spend Money On.3. Lubricate Inactive Blades Before UseNot everyone uses their beard trimmer on a regular basis. If one has been inactive for a long while, another step should be taken before using it. “Place a drop of oil on the blades (where they meet) and a drop on either corner. Turn on the trimmer and let it run for 10 seconds so the oil can distribute and coat the entire blade, then store it away until you’re ready to use again.” These tasks can make a huge difference in the long run.For irregular beard trimmer users, Virgil adds that “it’s a good idea to lubricate the blades before actually grooming, and again just after to be make sure it’s operating at optimum performance.”4. Remove Buildup Several Times a YearIn addition to regular trimmer maintenance, there are certain tasks you should undertake throughout the year. “It’s wise to dip the blades into a small container of charcoal starter and turn it on for 10-20 seconds,” Virgil says. “This will help to remove any buildup of hair and skin that can hinder performance. But remember to oil the blades immediately after to re-lubricate and protect from oxidation.” He recommends doing this two or three times a year.5. Watch for Rust A blade that hasn’t been maintained well can start to show signs of wear: specifically, what Virgil describes as “dusty brownish” areas. That might signal time for a change, he says. “This is oxidization, or rust, beginning and is often a sign it’s time for a new trimmer or replacement blade.” It may still run, but a rusty blade can pose its own problems: “It will trim the hairs but is doing so in a way that can destroy the ends and make them look unhealthy. Bad blades can also seize up during use and pull at the hair, which is an uncomfortable experience.”Related: Best Face Wash for Men in 2025, According to Skin Type6. Make Sure It’s ChargedThe way that your trimmer is powered can also play a part in its upkeep. “Cordless trimmers can be nice, but like any rechargeable device, over time the battery loses its strength and it needs to be replaced,” Virgil says. “A trimmer plugged into the wall will always be the most powerful option, and will cut the hair with ease.” Being aware of any charging discrepancies can help you determine whether it’s time to seek out a new trimmer. 7. Store in a Cool, Dry SpaceAfter a rinse or cleaning, leave it in a cool, dry space to dry before storing it away. If you stow it without letting it dry, you risk it rusting or accumulating bacteria, both of which defeat the purpose of caring for the device and your health. When you store the trimmer between uses (after it’s dry), make sure it’s away from moisture and dust. Essentially, zip it away in a designated case, or tuck it into a drawer—again, only after it is completely dry.How We Picked the Best Beard TrimmersTo assemble the best beard trimmers for men, we tested dozens of different options on the market, from new products to classics (hey, Braun).
